Wind Energy Lecture: Control Co-Design: A game changer?

Wind Energy Lecture: Control Co-Design: A game changer? 10 september 2024 12:30 t/m 13:30 - Locatie: TUD fac ME Hall D | Zet in mijn agenda On behalf of Sebastiaan Mulders, the TU Delft Wind Energy Institute cordially invites you for a lunch lecture on Tuesday 10 September at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering: Control Co-Design: A game changer? By Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manuel Pusch, Professor in Control Engineering and Flight System Dynamics at Dept. of Mechanical, Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering at Munich University of Applied Sciences As complex systems like modern wind energy systems evolve, the traditional separation between system design and control design becomes increasingly inadequate. Control Co-Design (CCD) emerges as a crucial approach, where these processes are integrated from the outset to address the coupled dynamics inherent in such systems. This talk reviews the latest advancements in CCD for dynamical systems, offering insights into how control functions can be seamlessly incorporated into overall system design. An overview of formulating and solving corresponding optimization problems is given with the goal to find an optimal balance between competing objectives under the presence of constraints. Through examples, the talk will explore the tangible benefits of CCD while also addressing the challenges and limitations that accompany this integrated approach. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of why Control Co-Design is not just a theoretical concept, but a practical necessity for the future of engineering. Biography Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manuel Pusch received his diploma in aerospace engineering from the Technical University of Munich and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Hamburg in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Before joining Munich University of Applied Sciences as a professor in control engineering, he was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Colorado Boulder with Prof. Lucy Pao. His research focuses on modeling, control, and optimization of extreme scale and highly flexible structures such as wind energy systems and flight systems. A successful D&I grant story

Aerospace Diversity Day 2023: “Kicking Bias: How Unconscious Bias affects the Work Floor and How to Unlearn it” In October 2023, the Aerospace Diversity Day, themed "Kicking Bias: How Unconscious Bias Affects the Work Floor and How to Unlearn It," brought together students, professionals, and experts to confront one of the most pervasive challenges in modern workplaces. Bias, often lurking unnoticed, influences decisions and interactions across all sectors, including aerospace. The event began with a compelling keynote by neuropsychologist Philip Jordanov, who delved into the brain's mechanics, offering a deep understanding of unconscious bias. His insights set the tone for the day, providing a scientific foundation that resonated throughout the discussions. Commodore Saskia Siemensma from the Royal Netherlands Air Force captivated the audience with her personal narrative, highlighting the gender biases she faced in her military career. Her symbolic gesture of removing her tie—a protest against male-centered military uniforms—struck a powerful chord, emphasizing the need for change in traditionally male-dominated fields. Malou van der Pal from LVNL followed, sharing her experiences in implementing Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) initiatives within a large organization, demonstrating the real-world impact of such efforts. The day culminated in a dynamic panel discussion led by the esteemed Rahel de Vriend, where representatives from KLM, TNO, TU Delft, and Transavia offered actionable steps on becoming better allies in the fight against bias. The event, made possible by the D&I office grant programme, was more than just a series of talks—it was a catalyst for change. The grant allowed for the inclusion of high-quality speakers like Jordanov and professional facilitation by de Vriend, enhancing the day's impact. The networking session that followed transformed insights into connections, leaving attendees with a renewed commitment to fostering inclusivity in their fields. Aerospace Diversity Day 2023 was a resounding success, sparking important conversations and paving the way for continued progress in combating unconscious bias. Continuing this first attempt, there will be another event organised coming October! Are you interested in applying for the next D&I office grant? Then check here and make sure to submit your application before November 1st 2024 !

De slogan van RSM spreekt mij enorm aan: Become a force for positive change in the world.
