Aerospace Diversity Day 2023: “Kicking Bias:  How Unconscious Bias affects the Work Floor and How to Unlearn it”

In October 2023, the Aerospace Diversity Day, themed "Kicking Bias: How Unconscious Bias Affects the Work Floor and How to Unlearn It," brought together students, professionals, and experts to confront one of the most pervasive challenges in modern workplaces. Bias, often lurking unnoticed, influences decisions and interactions across all sectors, including aerospace.

The event began with a compelling keynote by neuropsychologist Philip Jordanov, who delved into the brain's mechanics, offering a deep understanding of unconscious bias. His insights set the tone for the day, providing a scientific foundation that resonated throughout the discussions.

Commodore Saskia Siemensma from the Royal Netherlands Air Force captivated the audience with her personal narrative, highlighting the gender biases she faced in her military career. Her symbolic gesture of removing her tie—a protest against male-centered military uniforms—struck a powerful chord, emphasizing the need for change in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Malou van der Pal from LVNL followed, sharing her experiences in implementing Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) initiatives within a large organization, demonstrating the real-world impact of such efforts. The day culminated in a dynamic panel discussion led by the esteemed Rahel de Vriend, where representatives from KLM, TNO, TU Delft, and Transavia offered actionable steps on becoming better allies in the fight against bias.

The event, made possible by the D&I office grant programme, was more than just a series of talks—it was a catalyst for change. The grant allowed for the inclusion of high-quality speakers like Jordanov and professional facilitation by de Vriend, enhancing the day's impact. The networking session that followed transformed insights into connections, leaving attendees with a renewed commitment to fostering inclusivity in their fields.

Aerospace Diversity Day 2023 was a resounding success, sparking important conversations and paving the way for continued progress in combating unconscious bias. Continuing this first attempt, there will be another event organised coming October!
