Modern Prometheus: AGI as the Next Grand Human Project

Modern Prometheus: AGI as the Next Grand Human Project 03 december 2024 12:45 t/m 14:00 - Locatie: TU Delft Library, Main Hall | Zet in mijn agenda Register Are you curious about the future of artificial intelligence? Do you want to understand how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could shape the trajectory of humanity? Join visiting professor from Norway, Dr. Matthew Landers, as he pries into the myth behind our symbolic flame in relation to history and science. In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Landers will begin with a critical examination of OpenAI's mission and the latent propositions within its Charter, highlighting the company's transition from a research lab to a dominant player in the AI industry, particularly after the public launch of ChatGPT. From there he will elucidate the varying definitions of “artificial general intelligence” and situate AGI within the broader context of artificial intelligence (AI) research, tracing its conceptual development and the competing paradigms that seek to define and operationalize it. Finally, we will explore AGI's role as a transformative force, paralleling historic projects like the Manhattan Project and the Apollo Program. This lecture is not just about technology; it’s about understanding the profound implications AGI holds for our future—economically, philosophically, and existentially. Free lunch included. About the speaker Dr. Matthew Landers is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Education at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. His research interests span British literature and culture of the Long-Eighteenth Century, biohumanities, history of medicine, literary studies, and critical thinking in education. Dr. Landers' work explores the intersections of literature, science, and education. He has published on topics such as transhumanism, the biology of free will, early modern anatomies and dissection, and the materialist dimensions of memory in Tristram Shandy. His current projects include a monograph on the novels of Olga Tokarczuk, in addition to articles addressing the future of artificial intelligence. His research group was recently awarded a major four-year grant from the Research Council of Norway to explore the influence of ethical and cultural values on the construction of education in Norway.

Boost your creativity through reversed prompting

Boost your creativity through reversed prompting 11 november 2024 12:00 t/m 14:00 - Locatie: TU Delft Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Studio 23/24 | Zet in mijn agenda Register Let's not get caught up in questions like 'Is AI creative?' Instead, let's focus on how you can become more creative through interacting with AI. This lunch workshop is designed to shift your mindset on interacting with AI, empowering you to think more creatively through reversed prompting. We'll start with a brief introduction to the theory behind creativity, followed by hands-on practice with a creativity empowering AI-tool. You'll leave with actionable insights and practical experience to boost your creativity in your AI interactions. Light lunch provided. About the researchers Ir. Katrina Heijne is a researcher and lecturer at the Design, Organisation and Strategy (DOS) department at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. As part of the minor Connected Creativity and the master course 'Creative Facilitation' she developed several courses and master classes to enhance creativity in a deliberate way in individuals, groups and organization. She is co-director of the Delft Design Lab Connected Creativity . Michail Skalistiris Pikis is a software engineer and junior creativity researcher. Since completing his MSc in Software Engineering at the University of Amsterdam, he has been exploring the relationship of human creativity and Generative AI. His ongoing work has been presented at AIXD Amsterdam 2024 and Delft's Connected Creativity Lab . Alongside his research and theoretical exploration of creativity, he co-designed and performed in a dance theater production with Plefsis Studio in June 2024.

People/Portrait on the Fly live generative video exhibition

People/Portrait on the Fly live generative video exhibition 22 november 2024 16:00 t/m 08 januari 2025 18:00 - Locatie: TU Delft Library, Main Hall | Zet in mijn agenda ** Opening Reception: 22 November in the Main Hall ** Internationally renowned digital artists and professors from the University of Art and Design in Linz, Laurent Mignonneau & Christa Sommerer , will exhibit two live generated video works in the Library Main Hall. The combination will make you think twice about the self and flocking behaviors in a constantly moving society. The interactive installation, People on the Fly , consists of a monitor that shows a swarm of a few thousand flies. When a person positions himself in front of the monitor, the insects build up the contour of the person. They begin to arrange and rearrange themselves continuously, thereby creating a recognizable likeness of the individual. Posing in front of the monitor attracts the flies. Within seconds they invade the face, but even the slightest movement of the head or of parts of the face drives them off. The portraits are thus in constant flux; they construct and deconstruct. Portrait on the Fly is a commentary on our love for making pictures of ourselves (Selfie-Culture), about change, transience and impermanence. ©2015 & ©2016 Laurent Mignonneau & Christa Sommerer. Photo: Michael Maritsch, at OK Center Linz, 2022 People on the Fly ©2016, Laurent Mignonneau & Christa Sommerer About the speakers Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau are internationally renowned media artists, researchers and pioneers of interactive art. They worked 10 years in Japan as Associate Professors at the IAMAS Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences in Gifu, Japan and as Researchers and Artistic Directors at the ATR Advanced Telecommunications Research Lab in Kyoto Japan. Previously they were artists-in-residence at the MIT CAVS in Cambridge, USA, artists-in-residence at the NCSA National Center for Supercomputing Applications Beckmann Institute in Champaign Urbana, IL, USA, and artists-in-residence at the NTT-InterCommunication Center in Tokyo. In 2004 they founded the Department of Interface Cultures at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, where they are both professors.

Letters from Nature opening reception and Gen AI Competition awards

Letters from Nature opening reception and Gen AI Competition awards 17 oktober 2024 16:00 t/m 18:30 - Locatie: TU Delft Library Main Hall | Zet in mijn agenda Register Please join us for a special community event! The opening programme for the Gen AI on the Fly exhibition and unveiling of the newest installation of Letters from Nature , will take place featuring an artist talk by Jeroen van der Most & Peter van der Putten with AI dialogue, and an awards reception of the Gen AI on the Fly campus competition . Come see what the TUD community is doing with generative AI! Peter van der Putten (left) and Jeroen van der Most (right). About the artists Dutch artist Jeroen van der Most , or shorthand Most, has created art with data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence for over 10 years. His current focus is on reaching a next level in AI-based creation in which the boundaries of technology, humans and nature have faded. To help shape the societies of tomorrow. He is a frequent international keynote speaker about his art and vision on technology. Peter van der Putten is an assistant professor in AI and Creative Research at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), Leiden University, The Netherlands. He is interested in how intelligence can evolve through machine learning--or going even beyond Artificial Intelligence to Artificial X by studying other human qualities (such as creativity, emotions, or even topics such as religion) through an artificial creature lens to see what the boundaries are, and to speculate on possible futures. Next to his academic position he is also a director for decisioning and AI solutions at Pegasystems.

The exhibition also reveals some preliminary data about Gen AI / LLM usage on campus. The TU Delft Library examines generation (with AI) through the lens of it first pair of art tech collaborators: Jeroen van der Most & Peter van der Putten , with their environmentally provocative artwork Letters from Nature , which uses Gen AI to pen climate change activist letters from the POV of the planet. This artwork serves as a professional example of incorporating Gen AI, more specifically LLM output, for creative and positive impact and purpose.
