Webinar by Dr. Renske van den Berge: Product lifetime extension through design: Encouraging consumers to repair electronic products in a circular economy.

Webinar by Dr. Renske van den Berge: Product lifetime extension through design: Encouraging consumers to repair electronic products in a circular economy. 06 september 2024 16:00 - Locatie: on-line - Door: Social Innovation in the Energy Transition | Zet in mijn agenda Product lifetime extension through design: Encouraging consumers to repair electronic products in a circular economy. Topic: To transition to a more sustainable society, we should realize that reduced production and consumption of (electronic) products is required to decrease our energy consumption. For the energy transition, repair is an impactful circular strategy as it lengthens product lifetimes and, consequently, reduces their demand. However, a technically repairable product design may not automatically result in repair behavior, as most discarded products are never repaired during their lifetime. Consumers and their behavior thus play a key role in prolonging the lifetimes of our daily used products. Literature proposed several repair strategies, however, predominantly from a technical (engineering) perspective. In my research, I explore the role of design in stimulating consumers to adopt repair behavior. However, one should realize that creating a repairing society is not solely a consumer’s responsibility. Product lifetime extension requires a shift in current industry practice and businesses organization, as well as the design of appropriate policies. A systemic approach and cooperation between stakeholders is required. In this talk, I will share some guidance for designers, researchers and policymakers to encourage repair practices of (electronic) products within a circular economy. About the Speaker After graduating her master’s Strategic Product Design at Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology, Renske van den Berge worked for 1,5 years at the FMCG sector. This is where she was confronted with our daily consumption patterns of products, and became eager to change this. She went back to Delft where she obtained her Ph.D. degree and joined the PROMPT project. In this role, she wrote several academic papers and project reports as a work package leader. She presented at multiple international academic conferences. In addition, she disseminated her work via multiple channels, such as an UNEP webinar, a video in NEMO science children’s museum, and an exhibition at Dutch Design Week 2022. It is Renske’s both professional and personal mission to contribute to the transition to a more sustainable and circular society. She currently works at the Energy Transition Studies (ETS) department at TNO, where she aspires to apply her knowledge and research skills in the Social Innovation team. Recording available!

Lunch lecture: Synergizing land, water and energy resources in long-term energy planning for sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa

Lunch lecture: Synergizing land, water and energy resources in long-term energy planning for sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa 20 juni 2024 13:45 t/m 13:30 - Locatie: Faculty of EWI, Mekelweg 4 (Chip Hall) | Zet in mijn agenda Presenter: Edo Abraham, Associate Professor of Water & Control Systems at the Water Management Department, TU Delft Date: Thursday, 20 June 2024 Time: 12:45-13:30 (free lunch from 12:15) Location: Faculty of EWI, Mekelweg 4 (Chip Hall) In this presentation, Edo will talk about some challenges and opportunities that arise in energy planning with land and water resource constraints, especially with transboundary basins and nascent regional power markets. He will present two examples where we integrate land and water resources within energy planning through technologies such as pumped hydro storage and floating photovoltaics. He will discuss how the EPIC Africa project uses a CLEWs (Climate-Land-Energy-Water) framework to address issues of enhancing energy reliability, resilience to climate impacts, and the sustainability of energy pathways with examples of the Nile, Tana, and Volta basin countries. He will briefly discuss EPIC’s participatory transition management approach to embed citizens' values in the project partner countries. Dr. Edo Abraham is an Associate Professor of Water & Control Systems at the Water Management Department, TU Delft. His research is driven by global societal challenges related to water management for sustainable development and climate change strategies. Edo develops and applies novel integrated modelling, control, and optimization approaches to make integrated water-energy-food systems more efficient and resilient against uncertainties. Some of his research deals with model predictive control methods for optimizing water allocation and use in agricultural systems, planning networked water resources systems under uncertainty, optimizing water system operations for demand response, and optimizing nascent water-energy infrastructure in African water basins for transboundary cooperation. In his collaborative work, Edo endeavors to integrate sensitivity to values and is passionate about global development foregrounded inequitable access to resources and infrastructure, environmental sustainability, international solidarity, and social justice. Edo has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal publications on these subjects. He is also an Associate Editor for Energy Systems (Springer) and the Journal of Hydroinformatics (IWA). Edo holds a PhD in Control Engineering (Aeronautics) and a first-class honours MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He received both degrees from Imperial College London, UK, in 2008 and 2013, respectively.
