Paso Doble

But girls just don't like tech

But girls just don't like tech With Shirley de Wit 09 oktober 2024 11:45 t/m 13:00 - Locatie: X – Theatre Hall | Zet in mijn agenda A lunch lecture on our gendered society and how this affects women in STEM fields. Many girls just don’t like technology, or do they? At TU Delft, 31% of the students and 30% of the staff are women. Increasing these numbers would result in more people who can fill STEM vacancies. Furthermore, research shows that increased diversity results in more productive and innovative products. But why do we have this lack of women in many (but not all) STEM fields? Several societal factors affect the image of STEM professions, self-efficacy and interest development. During this lunch lecture, Shirley de Wit will take you along by explaining the causes, consequences and discussing possible solutions to close the gender gap in STEM. Shirley de Wit is a PhD Candidate at the EEMCS Faculty who focuses on women in Computer Science. With her double master's degree in Computer Science and Science Communication, she likes combining her technical knowledge and skills with social sciences. She started her research at VHTO the Dutch expert centre on gender diversity in STEM. Since February, she continues her work at the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center for Education and Learning. Her work includes research on stereotypes, interest development and gender-inclusive education. With her research, she hopes to contribute to closing the gender gap in Computer Science. 11:45 Walk-in 12:00 Lecture 12:45 Questions and discussion 13:00 End Register here Target group: Staff & Students Format : Lunch Lecture Food options : Lunch Language: English Accessibility: In addition to stairs, X has two lifts in the building: The lift opposite the entrance to Cafe X takes you from the ground floor to the 1st floor. Hidden Expectations - Intercultural teamwork in the PhD trajectory

Hidden Expectations - Intercultural teamwork in the PhD trajectory 07 oktober 2024 09:00 t/m 12:30 - Locatie: Schierbeek Hall – IDE | Zet in mijn agenda Facilitators; Annemiek van Boeijen – culture sensitive design Willemine Biemond – internationalization Elif Ozcan – inclusive research There are all kinds of forms of doing research, and academic outcomes also can vary enormously between countries, institutes, research groups and single projects, especially in multi-disciplinary design and engineering projects where different research cultures meet. How to successfully manage your supervisory teams? In this session we will mainly discuss the social aspects within collaborations (rather than outcomes and research approaches). What does your supervisor and mentor expect from you and - equally important - what do you expect from your supervisory team? And how do you give meaning to comments such as 'interesting' and 'pretty good'? How we understand each other is partly related to the research culture, where we publish, and influenced by our cultural backgrounds (e.g. upbringing and education). Do the terminologies used mean the same for all the members of the multidisciplinary supervisory teams? In this session, we shine light on barriers due to unconscious biases, differences, use of language, and hidden expectations (unspoken matters), and we discuss ways to overcome such barriers, and possibilities for a pleasant collaboration. We are looking forward to meeting TUD PhD candidates! This workshop is especially useful if you are started and settling in or if you are managing a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team. You will receive 0.5 Graduate School credits in the Transferable Skills Category for your participation. Register here Target group: PhD Candidates Number of participants: 30 Format : PhD Candidates Food options: 12.00-12.30 lunch, registration for the training should be done before October 3 (18:00) Accessibility of the room booked: Location is accessible with wheelchair.
