Wood is an extremely versatile medium. In these courses, you will become more confident in using hand tools for carving, choosing which wood to use, transferring your design onto the wood, and controlling the tools you use; moving between skills, art and design-based work.
Wild wood
In this course, you will learn the basics of wood carving. Starting from a piece of wood, you will use hand tools such as gauges, knives, axes and Japanese saws to remove material and practise creating three-dimensional designs.
Based on your experience, capabilities and ambitions, teacher Teresa will guide you through the process of finding your design. No experience is needed and examples will be provided. More experienced carvers are encouraged to work, or continue working, on their own project, while beginners can do individual practice exercises to hone their skills.
Be inspired by different trees and how they grow and learn more about essential woodworking concepts such as grain, heartwood and sapwood, wood drying and wood treatment. In the classes, you’ll learn to sharpen and maintain your tools for fun and safe carving.
Specialist guest teachers, specialising in e.g. knife making, spoon carving or finishing techniques, will also be invited to various sessions.

Teresa Hunyadi
Teresa is an Austrian wood sculptor and tree enthusiast with a strong emphasis on sustainability in her work. She divides her time between Scotland and the Netherlands. She studied woodcarving at universities in Austria and Japan, and she teaches at the Design Department of Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Her work includes representational and abstract elements, predominantly created with hand tools in wood, valuing each piece for its own character as a living material.

Practical Information
Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes (no open toes). All materials are included and will be provided during the classes.
The Open Studio: Woodworking is open to anyone with an X subscription who has completed a Woodworking or Furniture Design course, or anyone with experience with woodworking, at any time when an assistant is present. All you need to do is register beforehand. The assistant is there to help when needed, to give tips and advice and to ensure that all materials and equipment are used responsibly and safely. During the Open Studio: Woodworking you are welcome to use hand tools and small machines. Materials are also available for purchase. Or you can bring your own materials.
