Jiu jitsu is a Japanese martial art that is inspired by Samurai defensive techniques. Jiu jitsu is a combination of throwing and grappling techniques, mixed with punches, kicks and blocks. One of the most important principles of this sport is using your opponent’s power and speed against them to perform a throw, for example. This means that a lighter and smaller person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent.
During the beginners lessons you learn the basic jiu jitsu techniques. The lessons start with a warming-up, after which you practice the various defensive techniques. During the lessons, a lot of time is put into learning falling techniques, and how to free yourself from grips and dodge or counter an attack. You will also learn how to defend yourself on the ground in situations with one or more attackers. Once you have mastered these basic techniques, you will then put them to practice in different ways of sparring (randori).

Teacher
Christopher Konik
Christopher started practicing Jiu Jitsu in 2013 and not long after obtained his licence to teach. He taught Jiu Jitsu for five years at the university WWU Münster. Next to that, Christopher also has a lot of experience teaching rowing. He describes his teaching style as varied (because of the many different exercises) and goal-oriented (everything in the training supports achieving the goal). None of Christopher’s lessons is the same and you will be keen to keep on training!
