IDE alumnus Jenske Gosens dedicated her graduation project to figuring this out. Her recommendation? A neutral booking platform that assigns sustainability scores to different travel methods. “This platform both motivates and facilitates different kinds of travellers.” 25 July 2024 App to pre-order flight meals saves fuel and food Design students Joep van Gils and Inès Peeters have designed a concept for a pre-order app that allows passengers to choose their in-flight meals in advance when they check in online. “This is a quick win and cost-neutral solution for airlines to fly more sustainably, reduce food waste and improve travel experience.” 14 June 2024 Fading boundary between farmers and tigers The geothermal energy well at TU Delft campus will soon start heating various buildings on campus and in the city of Delft. But it provides insufficient heat in winter, and excessive heat in summer. Adding underground seasonal storage allows surplus summer heat to be put to good use in winter. Martin Bloemendal and his team develop the means to make integration of such an underground seasonal buffer possible at a large scale. 23 April 2024 Packing-free soft drinks on TU Delft Campus with iTapToo 21 April 2024 The holistic textile design research of Holly McQuillan As a fashion and textile design engineer, IDE researcher Holly McQuillan wants to change the fashion industry by introducing it to the woven textile-form technique, a kind of 3D weaving which involves creating three-dimensional form by using the weaving process. Through this she wants to make the industry more sustainable by providing realistic tools. “Automated 3D weaving increases control and flexibility, and may make production more cost efficient.” 18 April 2024 Jelt Cup Cleaning Station pilot at TU Delft IDE students have once again shown that taking initiative can be key in creating a better designed environment. Since 2024, tea and coffee drinkers on campus have been required to use reusable cups. Upon finding that 65% of students experience difficulty in keeping their cups clean, a group of IDE students designed the Jelt Cup Cleaning Station. And now, TU Delft has agreed to do a pilot run of their stations on campus.
