The Trésor contains historical books, magazines, maps, photos and prints from before 1900. Material from the Trésor is too expensive and too fragile to borrow. Viewing and copying is possible in the presence of the manager in the Trésor. In some cases, the material is too fragile to copy. Then take pictures with a digital camera. Health Insurance Information Session 18 April 2024 15:30 till 17:00 - Location: online | Add to my calendar Information Session: Dutch basic health insurance for employees and partners Learn about the workings of the Dutch basic health insurance (Public insurance) from advisors of International Insurances. In the session we will explain such as but not limited to: General information of the Dutch basic health insurance, the laws and regulations Types of Dutch basic health insurances Coverage including general practitioner, referrals, pharmacist, specialist care, hospital care Supplemental insurances for dental, physiotherapy, pregnancy, coverage abroad in case of emergency Mandatory excess i.e. deductible (“eigen risico”) and personal contribution (“eigen bijdrage”) If you want to add a topic for the online meeting or you have questions, you can add in your questions at the end of the registration form. These questions will be shared with our presenters prior to the event. Example of one of these topics: Mandatory excess/deductible (“eigen risico”) When you have medical costs, you always have to pay a certain amount yourself. For 2024 this amount is € 385,-. Every calendar year the government decides the maximum of this amount. The central TU Delft Library is located in a very photogenic building. It is permitted to take photographs or film in this and the other TU Delft Library locations, if you follow a number of rules. For private use or study purposes You are allowed to make photographs and take video's, as long as you follow the rules below: Taking photographs or film during examination periods isn't allowed. Do not use flash (lights) inside the Library. You can't take photographs or film in the Glass hall, Orange room and Red room; these rooms are for silent study only. Only photograph library visitors and employees if you have asked their permission first or make sure they are not recognizable. You can only use the imagery for private or study purposes. If you would like to do a photo shoot or a filmshoot in the Library, please contact events-library@tudelft.nl . For commercial purposes Commercial photography and film recording is only permitted after approval and by arrangement. He now focusses on the ethics of influence and the concept of manipulation. His goal is to understand positive influence and distinguish it from negative influence, crucial in the design of new (automated) technology and for our social well-being.

Ilaria started her PhD program in the Renaud group about ultrasound imaging inside bones, contributing to the advancement of such non-invasive technique to characterize tissue composition and to quantify blood flow.

First prize for ZhenZhen Wu at the 2024 NWO Biophysics poster awards

ZhenZhen Wu's poster, “Absolute Voltage Imaging in Developing Zebrafish,” won first prize in the 2024 NWO Biophysics poster awards, competing against over 150 posters. A key solution to grid congestion

On behalf of the TU Delft PowerWeb Institute, researchers Kenneth Brunninx and Simon Tindemans are handing over a Position Paper to the Dutch Parliament on 14 November 2024, with a possible solution to the major grid capacity problems that are increasingly cropping up in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is unlikely to meet the 2030 climate targets, and one of the reasons for this is that large industry cannot switch to electricity fast enough, partly because of increasingly frequent problems around grid capacity and grid congestion. In all likelihood, those problems will actually increase this decade before they can decrease, the researchers argue. The solution offered by the TU Delft PowerWeb Institute researchers is the ‘flexible backstop’. With a flexible backstop, the current capacity of the power grid can be used more efficiently without sacrificing safety or reliability. A flexible backstop is a safety mechanism that automatically and quickly reduces the amount of electricity that an electric unit can draw from the grid (an electric charging station or a heat pump) or deliver (a PV installation). It is a small device connected or built into an electrical unit, such as a charging station or heat pump, that ‘communicates’ with the distribution network operator. In case of extreme stress on the network, the network operator sends a signal to the device to limit the amount of power. Germany recently introduced a similar system with electric charging stations. The backstop would be activated only in periods of acute congestion problems and could help prevent the last resort measure, which is cutting off electricity to users. ‘Upgrading the electricity network remains essential, but in practice it will take years. So there is a need for short-term solutions that can be integrated into long-term planning. We, the members of the TU Delft PowerWeb Institute, call on the government, network operators and regulator to explore the flexible backstop as an additional grid security measure,’ they said. Kenneth Brunninx Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Governance and Management, where he uses quantitative models to evaluate energy policy and market design with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions. Simon Tindemans is Associate Professor in the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids group at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. His research interests include uncertainty and risk management for power grids. TU Delft PowerWeb Institute is a community of researchers who are investigating how to make renewable energy systems reliable, future proof and accessible to everyone.

25 year celebration of formal collaboration between Delft University of Technology and the University of Campinas

On 25 October 2024 we celebrated 25 years of formal collaboration between Delft University of Technology and the University of Campinas. What began as a project to exchange some students in chemical engineering has now grown to a multifaceted and broad academic collaboration which accumulated into 24 joint research projects (>20 M Euro); 16 advanced courses and 15 Doctors with a Dual Degree PhD. Patricia Osseweijer, TU Delft Ambassador Brazil explained, “We are proud to show and reflect on this special day the added value we created resulting from our joint activities. The lessons we learned demonstrate that especially continuity of funds and availability for exchanges has contributed to joint motivation and building trust which created strong relations. This is the foundation for academic creativity and high-level achievements.” The program presented showcases of Dual Degree projects; research activities and education. It discussed the future objectives and new fields of attention and agree on the next steps to maintain and strengthen the foundation of strong relations. Telma Franco, Professor UNICAMP shared that “joint education and research has substantially benefitted the students, we see that back in the jobs they landed in,” while UNICAMP’s Professor Gustavo Paim Valenca confirmed that “we are keen to extend our collaboration to more engineering disciplines to contribute jointly to global challenges” Luuk van der Wielen highlighted that “UNICAMP and TU Delft provide valuable complementary expertise as well as infrastructures to accelerate research and innovation. Especially our joint efforts in public private partnerships brings great assets” To ensure our future activities both University Boards have launched a unique joint program for international academic leadership. This unique 7-month program will accommodate 12 young professors, 6 from each university. The programme began on 4 November 2024 in Delft, The Netherlands.

During the Teaching Academy's Education Day, the awards were presented for Educator of the Year and Education Team Award. The team that developed the Personal Development Weeks (Persoonlijke OntwikkelingsWeek or POW) of the Bachelor Renewal won the award for TU Delft Education Team of the Year.

TU Delft and India collaborate on self-supervised Learning for Plastic Hotspots Identification from Satellite Images

Open Day of the Newly Upgraded INSYGHT Lab

The INSYGHT lab at the Intelligent Systems (INSY) department has undergone a remarkable transformation, now boasting cutting-edge technology that includes multi-camera capture systems, advanced robotics, a robotic arm, audio synthesis capabilities, a sound-attenuated booth, and extended reality (XR) equipment. Advancing AI Integration in the European Energy Sector

As the digital age transforms the energy landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) offers more and more solutions for enhancing efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. In collaboration with EPRI Europe, TU Delft is spearheading the AI-EFFECT project, which focuses on accelerating the development, testing, and validation of AI applications in the energy sector.

Not sure where to go with questions about your studies, personal development or wellbeing? Connect's student hosts are happy to help and think with you, whether your question is big or small. You are welcome to drop in between 12:00 and 14:00 Monday to Friday. In November you can find us Monday to Wednesday in Exhale and Thursday and Friday in the Aula, next to the TU Delft shop. X is cleaning up!

Friday 15 November, between 10:30 and 11:30 am, X is hosting a giveaway event! We have some furniture and other items left that are still too good to throw away, so we'd like to make others happy with it. As a TU Delft student, you are welcome to come and see if there's anything you can use. All items are for free. How the giveaway works: First come, first served. You will be assisted in the order of arrival. Sign in at 10:30 a.m. in Freetown Foyer. A line will be created at the registration desk. Tickets will be handed out in the order of the line, granting access to the room with all available items. Each person may choose and take up to 2 items. You must take the items immediately. Items cannot be left at X. You are responsible for any required transportation and/or carts. You should also bring any necessary tools (for example, to disassemble a cabinet). Once they're gone, they're gone. The registration desk closes at 11:30 AM at the latest. Goods will not be taken back. The event is for students studying at TU Delft. Other groups are excluded from participation. Items cannot be viewed in advance. Some examples of items we will be giving away: compartment cabinets from IKEA, old theater spotlights, chairs, a laughing mirror, clocks, desk lamps, a table.

Workshop: Are we prepared for the challenge of critical materials?

On 31 October, policymakers, industry leaders and academic institutions gathered at TU Delft | Campus The Hague to jointly reflect on education & knowledge transfer on raw material shortages. The event focused on collaboratively exploring key questions: What are the knowledge needs? What knowledge resources are needed? How can we effectively organize cooperation and implementation?

Explainer: Ice Melt and Antarctica

It is most unlikely to happen, but if all the ice in Antarctica were to melt, the sea level would rise 57 metres. That would put the Netherlands almost completely under water. For a long time, scientists thought this was impossible: the South Pole is unassailable. It turns out otherwise. Our PhD candidate Sophie de Roda Husman investigates the real situation and explains that one fragmenting ice shelf triggers a series of events that accelerate the melting process in this movie from Universiteit van Nederland. For her doctorate Sophie created a historical record of Antarctic surface melt that is high-resolution in both space and time, by gathering a large amount of data with remote sensing techniques. Switch from Qualtrics to Microsoft Forms

A new platform for creating and managing surveys The current survey creation and management platform, Qualtrics, will soon be phased out. Microsoft Forms will be the new platform for collecting data through surveys for the time being. A tender for TU-wide survey software will be launched soon. Why this change? Qualtrics is being phased out due to the doubling of costs. As an alternative, Microsoft Forms survey software offers better integration with our existing systems, a higher level of security and greater ease of use. This will make it easier and more efficient for everyone to create and complete surveys. What does this mean for you? Qualtrics will only be supported for current surveys. In fact, once Qualtrics is discontinued, it will no longer be possible to retrieve or migrate data from this platform. It is therefore important to migrate any current or upcoming surveys to Microsoft Forms as soon as possible. All use of Qualtrics must be closed and archived by 1 July 2025. IDE celebrates the opening of the ‘Triangular – Cooking for what Matters’ exhibition

On 13 November, IDE will celebrate the opening of the ‘Triangular - Cooking for What Matters’ exhibition in the IDE Etalage. The grand reveal will take place at 13:30, directly after the open lecture by Markus Orthey, Braun Design Director. Created in collaboration with Braun, the exhibition features work by students from TU Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and Politecnico di Milano.
