IDE celebrates the opening of the ‘Triangular – Cooking for what Matters’ exhibition

News - 06 November 2024 - Communication

On 13 November, IDE will celebrate the opening of the ‘Triangular - Cooking for What Matters’ exhibition in the IDE Etalage. The grand reveal will take place at 13:30, directly after the open lecture by Markus Orthey, Braun Design Director, in the Joost van der Grinten Hall from 12:45 – 13:30. Created in collaboration with Braun, the exhibition features work by students from TU Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and Politecnico di Milano.

The exhibition and its works showcase the diverse range of elements involved in cooking and eating—from sourcing and preparing ingredients to the cooking process itself, as well as circular waste management. Additionally, the concepts focus on conserving energy and resources, while promoting a conscious approach to our environment. The students’ work is not only visually appealing but also emphasises the significance of cooking as a social and cultural bond – even serving as an expressive means of identity.

Braun’s continued collaboration with academic institutions

The exhibition demonstrates Braun’s ongoing commitment to sustainable, meaningful design and showcases how innovative partnerships with academia can inspire future generations to create solutions that address real-world needs.

Braun has a longstanding history of collaborating with academic institutions (e.g. Ulm School of Design), starting as early as 1955. And it is these collaborations that have helped lay the foundation for its approach to small domestic appliances, emphasising functionality, simplicity, and aesthetic clarity.

Collaboration between TU Delft and Politecnico di Milano

One of the main goals of this collaborative effort was to assist TU Delft and Politecnico di Milano in comparing and exchanging experiences and knowledge to help improve one another’s education systems.

Advanced Concept Design (ACD)

Through the 2023/2024 Advanced Concept Design (ACD) IPD master course, IDE students had the chance to participate in this unforgettable project. The course gave its students the opportunity to work on real-life assignments that were co-created by the course’s coordinators and partner organisation.

ACD had a strong focus on research and design integration in the areas of culture, ergonomics, technology and visualisation. These areas of expertise, amongst others, contributed to the concept design project that the students worked on throughout the course. The 2023/2024 ACD course included the involvement of 200 students, 12 clients, and 40 staff members.

The IDE staff members involved in this collaboration include Marie-Claire Looze (ACD design coach), Marijke Dekker (ACD course coordinator), Daan van Eijk (ACD responsible professor), and Geert van den Boogaard (Delft Design & Impact)

What’s next?

What’s more, the collaboration between TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, and Braun will continue! A new project is already underway, focusing on "The New Frankfurter Kitchen" for the upcoming Frankfurt World Design Capital 2026 event.

Open Lecture on Braun Design by Markus Orthey

To mark the opening of the exhibition, staff and students are invited to attend an open lecture on Braun's design on 13 November from 12:45 – 13:30 in the Joost van der Grinten Hall.

Markus Orthey, Braun Design Director, will deliver a lecture highlighting the brand's evolution into a leader in industrial design, the influence academic institutions have had on its approach and success, and the influential designers (like Dieter Rams) whose work at Braun helped set global standards in industrial design.

Markus Orthey – Braun Design Director

Markus Orthey, Braun Design Director at De’Longhi Braun Household, has worked at Braun for 20 years. The common thread that runs through his life and his designs is a global and humanistic view of the world that places people in the centre. He is the driving force between Braun’s collaboration with a number of IDE courses at TU Delft.
