Get started with MS Teams
Everyone at TU Delft can use MS Teams. It’s available through the browser, but it is recommended to install it on your PC or Mac. You can also download the app on your phone and tablet.
Safari does not fully support MS Teams, please use Chrome instead, or even better, download the app.

Go to the Microsoft Teams website to download MS Teams for your PC. If you have a computer that is managed by the TU Delft ICT department you can find MS Teams in the Software Center. If you work in Windows 7 you can use MS Teams in your browser at https://teams.microsoft.com/. You can also install the app on your mobile phone or tablet. Please be aware that Microsoft collects telemetric data (which hardware and software you use) through its mobile apps. This is not the case if you use MS Teams via your computer.

MS Teams Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) from Microsoft is used to ensure that (y)our data is properly secured. It is advisable to choose authentication via the mobile app when activating, that way it is only a one-button operation in the app on your smartphone. Your phone number will be requested so that your account can be authenticated with a code, in addition to logging in with your [Your NetID]@tudelft.nl and password. Please follow the MFA manual for one-time activation.

Brightspace will continue to be the official online platform for education. Teams is a more informal platform that brings you extra tools and functionalities to use in your (online) classroom.
Before you start using MS Teams for your classroom, please note the following:
- Be aware of what is allowed and what is not allowed when working with MS Teams.
- Before sharing your screen during a video call: check your current browser windows, browser bookmarks, browser tabs, email notification settings, active programs or applications and the notification settings of chat programs you might run on your PC like WhatsApp, Skype or iMessage for possible privacy-related or sensitive data. Carefully managing your screens and active programs before you share your screen prevents the unwanted exposure of sensitive data to students or colleagues participating in the meeting while screen sharing.
- MS Teams is a cloud-based application. Changes, updates and new features will be added regularly.
- Brightspace is the official Student Communication Channel. It is fine to share information on MS Teams but make sure that this information can also be found on Brightspace.
- You need to create teams in MS Teams yourself, manage the content and add your students and colleagues. It is however possible to let students enrol themselves into a specific Team directly or with approval.
- Grading and assignment features are turned off. The TU Delft offers more mature solutions.
TU Delft Teaching Support aims to support teaching staff regarding the use of MS Teams in education. If you have other questions of a more technical nature, please check the M365 support team, review the manuals online or submit a call to ICT Teams.
Create a Team in MS Teams
A Team in MS Teams is a collaborative space where a group of people can chat, have online (video) meetings, share/collaborate on documents and more. This page helps you to create a new Team, choose how your Team is organised and set it up.
Students are not automatically added from Brightspace to a Team in MS Teams.
When creating a new Team in MS Teams, you can choose between the following eight Team Templates.
From February 2024, even if your MS Teams language is set to English, when creating a new Team the Team Template titles will still show up in the Dutch language.
Different Team templates allow for different options for who can access the Team. Click on the overview of Team templates below to see the list of their respective attributes.

A new team can be created using the following steps:
- Select the New Team icon in the navigation sidebar on the left.
- Choose the Team Template that you want to use.
- Give the Team a title and optionally a description.
- Some Team Templates require the Team to have two owners, if this is the case, add a co-owner to your Team. Adding new members to your Team can be done immediately or later.
- Click Next to finish configuring your New Team.

- To add a Channel, select More options next to your Class Teams' name and then Add a Channel.
- Enter a Name and an optional Description of your Channel.
- Choose the Privacy settings of the Channel:
- Standard Channels will be available to everyone.
- Private Channels will only be available to students you choose.
- Optionally, check the box to Automatically show this Channel in everyone’s Channel list.
- Click on Add.
Add participants to your Team
There are multiple options to enrol students and teaching staff on your class Team:

- Navigate to the Team.
- Select More options
next to your Class Team. - Select Add member.
- Select the Students tab.
- Type in the name of the student(s) or the previously created Team in MS Teams and select Add. By adding a previously created Team, you will add all the members from that Team to your new Team.

If you provide students with a link, students can request to join the Team. It is possible for you to accept or deny their requests.
- Navigate to the Team.
- Select More options next to your Class Team and select Get link to Team
- Share the link with your students (for example via Brightspace). Students can then paste the link into any browser to join the Team.
- Select Close.

When you share a code for joining a Team, students can join directly. In this case, you will not receive a join request.
- Navigate to the Team.
- Select More options next to your Class Team and choose Manage team.
- Select the Settings tab > Team code > Generate.
- Share the code with your students (for example via Brightspace).
- Students can join the team by clicking on Teams
on the left side of the app and then Join or create a Team at the bottom of the Teams list. - Select Join a Team with a code, paste the code into the Enter code box, and click Join.

Lecturers can add up to 10 co-lecturers to a Class Team. Each co-lecturer will have the same permissions to:
• Set Team members permissions for Channels and conversations.
• Control @[Team name] mentions that will notify everyone on the Team.
• Allow @Channel or @[Channel name] mentions, which will notify members who have favorited the Channel.
• Allow use of stickers.- Navigate to the Class Team.
- Select More options next to your class team and select Add members.
- Select the Teachers tab, then type in the lecturer’s name or email and then select Add.
- The lecturer is immediately added to the Class Team as an Owner.
- Select Close to return to Teams.

To add a non-TU Delft lecturer (someone without a NetID), the owner of the Team has to fill in the email address of the external user and select it, similar as in the steps above (see screenshot below). An email will then be sent to the address with an invitation to join the Team. The external user needs to have an MS Teams account to be able to accept the invitation and will receive a guest role.
