Project summary: Physicians’ reflections on managing their ability to perform throughout their careers, in relation to quality and safety of care delivery.
About the project
Physician well-being and performance are considered cornerstones for high quality care delivery. Physicians engage in complex and uncertain work in ‘non-stop’ environments, requiring much more than clinical knowledge and skills. Much research has focused on the work environment and its association to physicians’ wellbeing. Yet, a more in-depth and long-term reflection from physicians’ perspectives on their ability to perform at work throughout their careers is missing. The objective of the present study is to explore how physicians perceive their work to affect their ability to perform and to unravel what physicians do to perform well throughout their careers. This study also discusses implications and potential (un)intended consequences of physicians’ actions for themselves, work practice and health care quality and safety.
The study method was a qualitative interview-based study conducted between January and June 2021. The first results were presented at the ISQua 2022 in Brisbane, fall 2022.
