Safe by Design

The TU Delft Safety & Security Institute has entered a partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the field of "Safe by Design". Safe by Design is a method that encourages including safety in the design from the very outset of the development of any product or process. The starting point here is that safety to a large extent is determined during the initial development phase. In doing so, safety risks can be reduced or prevented, making safety measures or adjustments at a later stage less likely or even unnecessary. The same rationale also applies to proactively including security considerations. Our institute is developing Safe by Design in a number of technical domains.

Dutch police force

National Security Innovation

The Dutch police force and TU Delft, headed by the TU Delft Safety & Security Institute, collaborate on innovation in domains such as smarter detection, cyber security, robotics and forensic research. An example is the joint Model-Driven Decisions Lab (MoDDL). The increased availability of information and new machine learning algorithms offer great opportunities for the work of the police. In the lab, research is done on how available information can be used to digitally represent situations and optimize interventions. Operational/tactical and strategic applications are coming together in this lab. Ethical issues and considerations play an important role in the research done.
Netherlands Forensics Institute

Innovating forensic research

How does someone fall down after a push or jump? How can you do good research at a crime scene? Can a computer model determine the time of death? And how do you get all traces out of a phone in a good way? These are just a few examples of studies that TU Delft and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) are conducting together. In April 2021 the collaboration has been strengthened by signing a joint Memorandum of Understanding. Furthermore, TU Delft has become member of Co van Ledden Hulsebosch Center: the interdisciplinary expertise center for forensic scientific and medical research in the Netherlands.
