Prof. dr. Horváth, I.
Imre Horváth is Professor of Computer Aided Design Engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.
Academic Background
I was born in Hungary in 1954, and completed my second and third stage educations there. I obtained MSc. diplomas in mechanical engineering and engineering education at the Technical University of Budapest. I worked for the Hungarian Shipyards and Crane Factory for more than six years. With additional studies, I specialized myself in computer aided design and engineering. I had various faculty positions at the Technical University of Budapest, and earned doctoral titles, including that from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. My research in Hungary focused on issues concerning geometric and structural modeling, knowledge-intensive software tools, advanced support of conceptual design, and virtual reality technologies and applications.
From 1997 onwards, I am a full professor at the Department of Design Engineering of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. I was heading the Section of Computer Aided Design Engineering and I am now the chair professor of the Cyber-Physical Systems Design research group. In the first 15 years of my employment at TU Delft, my research focused on advanced design support methodologies and means. My current research focuses on cognitive engineering of smart cyber-physical systems, with special attention to capturing dynamic context and building awareness, development of ampliative reasoning mechanisms, and functional and architectural self-adaptation of smart systems. In addition, I am interested in systematic methodologies of design research, design thinking and system thinking, system theory and engineering, human-in-the-loop/system-in-the-loop controls, and compositional development of smart products.
I have authored or co-authored more than 180 journal articles, more than 170 conference papers, 14 book chapters, and 2 books. I have received 4 best paper awards (e.g., from ASME, ICED). I have served 3 journals in various editorial positions. I am now emeritus editor-in-chief of the Journal Computer Aided Design. I edited/co-edited more than 20 journal special issues and 20 Proceedings. I initiated the International Symposia on Tools and Methods of Competitive Engineering (TMCE) and was its general chairman in the last 22 years. I served on the Executive Committee of the CIE Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for 7 years, also as Chair of Division. Now I am fellow of ASME. I presented more than 15 invited and keynote talks at international conferences and workshops. My H-index is 26, i10-index is 90, and ResearchGate score is above 55. There are more than 3300 citations on my work registered on Google Scholar. As educator I am interested in teaching concerning computational support of product design, in particular that of conceptual design, integrating research into design education, and teaching and coaching cyber-physical system design.
