Track Atmospheric Environment Engineering

We experience the atmosphere around us every day and take it for granted. Yet, it is changing! Frequent climate and weather extremes and pollution are straining our urban and rural living environment.

The track Atmospheric Environment Engineering (AEE) enables you to develop engineering solutions to keep our living environment climate resilient and healthy. Using environmental physics and real case studies, you will investigate atmospheric processes and explore questions like:

  • Why are cities are warmer than rural areas during heat waves?
  • Why do we hear noise better in the dark?
  • Why is rainfall more intense in big cities?
  • What causes winter smog?
  • How do these factors affect our bodies and what can we do about it?

Throughout this track you’ll apply scientific knowledge to real-world cases. You’ll learn to design innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges, helping create a healthy and sustainable living environment for all.

Key features

➨ Learn state-of-the-art observational and modelling techniques to understand our complex local weather and climate.
➨ Apply various tools to predict and mitigate local weather extremes, and  air and noise pollution.
➨ Design novel engineering solutions for future challenges affecting our atmospheric environment.

Track Curriculum

Stepping Stone Module: Fundamentals of Atmospheric Environmental Engineering

You start the track Atmospheric Engineering with the Fundamentals of Atmospheric Environmental Engineering module. This module focuses on physics and chemistry in urban atmospheric environments. You will learn to simplify complex processes, perform order-of-magnitude analysis, and use basic measurement and modelling techniques. Through lectures, hands-on experiments, and projects, you’ll explore concepts such as transport phenomena, radiative processes, urban energy balance, and atmospheric chemistry. The module takes place over Q2 and Q3.

A-Module: Atmospheric Measurements and Modelling

In this module you’ll learn about urban atmospheric measurement and modelling techniques through hands-on field experiments, numerical simulations, and a half-day ethics workshop. Key topics include atmospheric processes, data accuracy, quality control, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for urban environments.

B-Module: Grand Challenges in Atmospheric Environmental Engineering

In this module you’ll learn to identify and analyse challenges within the field of atmospheric environmental engineering. You'll use computational modelling, observational techniques, and data analysis for assessing air quality, noise levels, and urban weather patterns. You’ll learn to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, manage projects, and communicate solutions. The module includes a workshop on ethical responsibility of engineers, field visits, and lab experiments.

I chose this track because I wanted to better understand the main sources of air pollution and how air pollutants are transported and transformed in the air…. I hope to be able to link environmental issues to social issues and learn more about environmental inequalities.
