New filter checks links in email

News - 12 December 2019 - Communication

Do you always check an url in an email? Do you know what to look out for to see if an URL is reliable? Then it's good to know that some of these links will look different. At TU Delft we have increased the mail protection. All email from external parties send to employees (@tudelft.nl) email goes through a filter. That way we are better protected against phishing, malware, viruses, imposter email, spoofing attacks, and so on.

How does it work?Because all links go through a filter, you see "urldefense.proofpoint.com/..." instead of the real URL of the link when you hoover over it with your mouse. The link will still work and directs to the original location. However, the filter has already checked that the link is secure. When the filter marks a link as suspicious, you will be send to an information page instead. This way your @tudelft.nl addressed email will be protected at all locations, on and off campus, and on all the devices (pc, mac and mobile equipment) that you use.

If you want to copy a link and paste it in a different location, click on the link. In the browser, the original link will be visible. You can copy it there.

Why do we need mail protection?
Phishing and email-based attacks have become an increasingly IT security problem, and the TU Delft community is attacked on a regular basis. The filter protects us against viruses, blocks or redirects spam, checks links and attachments. This is an automated process and does not monitor or read private email messages. So your privacy is guaranteed.
