Jafarian, Y.

Profile

Dr. Yaser Jafarian is currently a post-doctoral fellow at Delft University of Technology in the framework of the BLUE Piling project. The project deals with novel installation methods and corresponding effects on the behavior of super-size offshore monopiles for wind turbines. The research is conducted through implementation of advanced physical modeling. Yaser received his PhD degree from Iran University of Science and Technology in 2009 and has more than one decade of experience in research and teaching activities at the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) as well as at Semnan University, Iran. He also was a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

Yaser published over 50 scientific articles in high-ranked peer-reviewed journals in the field of geotechnical engineering, with over 900 citations in total. He has supervised several MSc and PhD students and was lecturer of several courses for undergraduate and graduate students such as "Advanced Soil Mechanics", "Soil Dynamics", “Soil Improvement”, and "Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering". Yaser’s research field involves multiple areas of geotechnical engineering including dynamic soil properties, soil liquefaction, and seismic displacement of earth slopes.

In recent years, he has focused on physical and numerical modeling of geo-structures subjected to large seismic ground deformations during landslide and liquefaction conditions. Yaser has been involved in the analysis and design of various routine and complicated industrial projects such as the analysis and design of port-related structures. He acted as Guest Editor of a number of special issues in the International Journal of Civil Engineering and has become an Associate Editor for this journal. He has received recognition as outstanding reviewer from several leading journals involving Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Computers and Geotechnics, and International Journal of Geomechanics.

Research

As a researcher and also as a geotechnical engineer, Yaser worked on variety of geohazards from the geological viewpoint (in the absence of civil engineering structure) towards the effects of geohazards (like liquefaction or landslide) on the geo-structures. He is experienced in microzonation of geotechnical hazards in urban areas and also geotechnical site investigation. Summary of his research interests is outlined below:

  • Assessment of geohazards through analytical, numerical, and empirical methods
  • Earthquake hazard assessment and attenuation laws
  • Physical and numerical modeling of geotechnical structures
  • Liquefaction potential assessment and seismic performance of foundations in liquefiable ground
  • Landslide hazard assessment
  • Element cyclic and monotonic testing on soils and rocks
  • Database compiling, probabilistic and statistical analysis of geotechnical data
  • Machine learning in geotechnical problems
