Prof.dr. Laurens Siebbeles

Within the Opto-electronic Materials Section Laurens Siebbeles has been studying excitons and charge carriers in organic materials and inorganic quantum dots, nanorods and two-dimensional materials. Excitons/charges are produced by laser pulses and detected with optical and microwave/terahertz conductivity measurements on timescales from femto- to milliseconds. He pairs experiments with quantum mechanical electronic structure calculations and modeling of exciton and charge decay by (Auger) recombination.
Academic background
Laurens Siebbeles studied chemistry at the VU University in Amsterdam (1981-1986). He was PhD student at the FOM-institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam, where he investigated quantum interference effects in molecular photodissociation. In 1991 he became postdoc at the University of Paris Sud until 1994. After a short return to AMOLF he joined TU Delft in 1994 where he became honorary Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professor in 2001. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Chemical Physics. He regularly presents seminars at (inter)national conferences and universities, organizes (inter)national conferences, serves on (inter)national recruitment committees and boards for awarding research grants.
