RELEASE

The RELEASE project focuses on creating breakthroughs in large-scale energy storage systems through electrochemical conversion of electricity into molecules. It aims to enhance performance, reduce costs, and develop responsible system architectures and business models for integrating energy storage into current and future energy systems.

Local Inclusive Future Energy (LIFE) City Platform

The LIFE City platform is designed to smartly manage energy demand and supply in the Amsterdam Zuidoost area. By using a digital twin, the project tests smart energy exchange and storage solutions, making the local electricity grid more efficient and inclusive, supporting the future energy transition.

TradeRES: New Market Designs & Models for 100% Renewable Power Systems

TradeRES aims to develop and test a market design for near 100% renewable power systems. The project focuses on creating efficient incentives for both operational and investment decisions, ensuring security of supply, and managing price risks in a system dominated by variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

ERIGrid 2.0: Electrical Sustainable Power (ESP) Lab at TU Delft

ERIGrid 2.0 at TU Delft’s Electrical Sustainable Power (ESP) Lab supports multidisciplinary research on the system integration of new technologies into future digital power systems, focusing on high shares of renewable energy. The ESP Lab offers cutting-edge infrastructure and expertise, driving advancements in sustainable energy systems.

EASY-RES: Ensuring Stability in Renewable Energy-Powered Grids

EASY-RES aims to enhance energy security in a grid powered 100% by renewable energies by segmenting the grid into smaller semi-autonomous areas. These areas, called Individual Control Areas (ICAs), will manage energy production, storage, and consumption, while new Ancillary Services will be developed to stabilize grid voltage and frequency.

GARPUR: Advancing Reliability Management in European Power Systems

The GARPUR project develops new reliability criteria for European power systems, focusing on managing uncertainties from renewable energy and optimizing socio-economic outcomes across the grid.

ReSident: Enhancing Grid Protection and Resilience

The ReSident project develops a high-resolution, synchronized measurement platform to improve grid protection and stability. It focuses on managing power system disturbances and preventing cascading failures in the face of increased renewable energy use. The project involves TU Delft, Dutch utilities, and General Electric.

TSO2020: Synergizing Power Storage and Transport Infrastructure

The TSO2020 project aims to optimize the integration of power storage solutions with transport infrastructure by using existing power cables and gas networks to manage electricity and hydrogen distribution. It involves pilot tests and business planning to enhance grid management and hydrogen distribution along TEN-T corridors, with collaboration from Dutch and European partners.

COBRAcable Thesis

The thesis explores the COBRAcable project, a 325 km submarine interconnector between the Netherlands and Denmark designed to enhance renewable energy transfer and regional electricity security. It involves developing a RMS model of the cable using PSSE software, focusing on the performance of voltage source converter (VSC) controllers and comparing results with models in Powerfactory and PSCAD. The study addresses active and reactive power control, AC voltage stability, and fault ride-through capabilities.

ERIGrid

The ERIGrid project, completed in 2020, provided free laboratory access to researchers for smart grid and DER (Distributed Energy Resources) testing across Europe. It focused on enhancing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and co-simulation tools through multi-lab testing and training. The project aimed to validate complex smart grid systems holistically and continues its legacy through the ERIGrid 2.0 project.

CESEPS

CESEPS (Co-Evolution of Smart Energy Products and Services) is an ERA-Net Smart Grids Plus project funded by the European Commission. The project aims to advance smart energy products and services for local smart grids by enhancing performance, cost-efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. It focuses on validating existing technologies and developing new innovative solutions using a co-evolutionary approach.

PROMOTION

PROMOTION (PROgress on Meshed HVDC Offshore Transmission Networks) addresses the integration of renewable energy into the European grid via multi-terminal HVDC systems. The project explores DC circuit breaker (DCCB) technologies, focusing on vacuum and SF6-based circuit breakers, and evaluates their performance in various grid scenarios. TU Delft contributes to developing DC CB models and defining test procedures for HVDC protection.

P2P-TALES

P2P-TALES focuses on enhancing peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading among small prosumers by leveraging data-driven analytics and distributed trading protocols. The project aims to improve engagement and create incentive schemes that align with prosumers' financial and non-monetary interests.

Smart Grid Infrastructure Research

The Smart Grid Infrastructure project focuses on improving the modeling and analysis of transients in power systems, such as voltage and current changes during grid disturbances. The research aims to apply recent advances in computational methods to enhance the efficiency of these models.

Capturing the Societal Value of Smart Energy Systems

The project focuses on integrating moral values into the design of smart grid technologies to address ethical concerns such as privacy, security, reliability, and affordability. The goal is to develop innovative organizational models that are robust to value conflicts.

Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems with Integrated Large-Scale Offshore Wind Energy

This PhD research investigates how the integration of large-scale offshore wind energy with traditional and decentralized power generation affects the reliability of transmission networks. The study focuses on the Dutch EHV (Extra-High Voltage) transmission network, with findings applicable to other networks as well.

The Illuminator

The Illuminator is a DIY demonstration and education kit designed to help individuals and organizations understand and address the challenges of the energy transition. It simulates various energy systems, highlighting issues like renewable energy variability and solutions such as adjusting electric vehicle charging times to match renewable supply.
