The University of Michigan is an Engineering college founded in 1854 and belongs to one of the foremost engineering schools in the US. Shanghai Jiao Tong University was established in 1896 and is considered one of the most prestigious engineering universities in China. The UM-SJTU Joint Institute is founded in 2006. It offers English-only instruction and curricula and uses the educational model of leading US research universities. It is located in the center of the SJTU campus in the Minhang district, the largest campus in China.

Students can take between 12-18 units per semester and must take at least 12 credits to meet the visa requirements. All credit units must be taken at the College of Science and Engineering. An overview of courses offered per department can be found here. Some courses with limited capacity do not accept exchange students. For pre-requisite required courses, students must have taken courses considered equivalent to the pre-requisite. Students are allowed to take courses at undergraduate level only (course level B1-B4) unless approved otherwise. MSc students need to consult the coordinator for incoming exchange students to check whether they can be accepted for the selected courses.

Students may apply for accommodation at Student Residence. However, on-campus accommodation is not guaranteed due to limited spaces, especially for the academic year 2020/21. For off-campus housing extra costs will occur that can become very high.

Students can choose a combination of courses across different disciplines to fulfill their academic needs, provided that they fulfill the prerequisites of the respective course(s) and meet all enrolment conditions. In addition to undergraduate courses, students may also enrol into courses from the full-time postgraduate disciplinary engineering programs, provided that they can meet the course prerequisites and have the instructors’ approval. All HKUST's approved courses can be found in the Program and Course Catalogue.
