The Wijnhaven Building is owned by Leiden University. Therefore, some systems run on the Leiden University systems. In order to make sure that you can use all available facilities in the Wijnhaven Building at Campus The Hague, a Leiden University Card (LU Card) is essential.

You will be registered in the guest management system of Leiden University. In order to ensure that you have a LU-card before your first day of lectures in the Wijnhaven complex, please apply for the LU-card as soon as possible.

Your LU Card is required for the following purposes:

• Identification for the building/Leiden University;
• Library card of the Leiden University Library;
• Printing and copying;
• Access card to building also on evenings and weekends;
• Access to the Stichthagen Building near Central Station where some lectures will be hosted from;
• Access card to the bike storage of the Wijnhaven building (entrance at Lange Zand).

Printing and Copying

In order to print or copy, you must have a balance on your LU-Card. Please consult the following webpage for instructions on how to print, copy or top up your balance.

To obtain a LU-card please follow the steps below:

• Please send the following details to the office manager in The Hague secretariaat-denhaag@tudelft.nl latest July 31.
  • Your full name
  • Your (future) Dutch residential address
  • Your cell phone number
    If in August you do not have a Dutch address yet this will not be a problem, but please inform the office manager about this.
• After registration, you will receive an email from Leiden University with a link to login at Account Services. In order to request the LU-card, you will be asked to upload a photo, (maximum size 2 MB, format JPG of PNG, minimum size 300x400 pixels). Within two weeks, the card will be send to your Dutch address.
• Please bring your LU-card the first time you come at the Wijnhaven Building and visit the Servicedesk on the second floor. The LU card needs to be activated and authorized as “EPA” Please ask the servicedesk to take care of this.

You can work with your own laptop and connect to the wireless Eduroam network by using your TU Delft NetID. You can also connect to the internet by using your Leiden account. You will need your Leiden account to be able to print.

The Wijnhaven Building is used by TU Delft and Leiden University. These house rules apply to the 5th floor, where EPA is located.

The Servicedesk is located on the second floor of the Wijnhaven building. The people at the Servicedesk can assist you with any questions related to the building and your LU-card and is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00 until 17.00 hrs. The Wijnhaven building has a roof garden where staff, lecturers, students and visitors are welcome. There are 350 places to study or relax. 

On the ground floor, the 2nd, 3rd and 5th floors of the building, free lockers are available for students, staff and visitors of the building. You need to use a 4 digit pincode. Please always empty your locker at the end of the day. The lockers will opened before the building closes, so you can't leave your belongings in the lockers during the night.

For international students: If plan your trip to The Hague/Delft, please check the latest information on this page. The Introduction Programme for Master Students usually starts around mid-August. Also, the Grand Challenges Accepted Conference takes place in August as well at the Campus The Hague (Building Wijnhaven).

If you do not have accommodation arranged yet, we advise you arrive around the end of July. It will take some time to arrange housing opportunities. Please note:

• A lot of people are looking for rental houses in the summer. Most landlords or companies are only interested in meeting you in person. Often, you can't move in until September or October, which can be stressful! Plan ahead.
• Delft, Rotterdam and Rijswijk are good alternative locations to look for a house. Please note that some lectures will be attended in Delft. The second year of EPA will take place in Delft for the biggest part.
• you can check DUWO, funda.nl and Facebook groups to find housing. Many EPA students are living in The Hague.
• You can check out the website of the National Tax Service (Belastingdienst) to find out if you are eligible for funding. 
• Make sure you  register with the municipality wherever you choose to live. This is required for completing your registration with TU Delft.

Health insurance

Please make sure you do have a medical insurance, preferably including dental care. Check out this page on the TU Delft’s website about information on healthcare and insurance.

Emergencies

• For life threatening situations call: 112 (ambulance, fire department or police department) or visit the emergency room at the nearest hospital.
• If you are not feeling well and your symptoms are not life threatening, you can contact your general practitioner and make an appointment. Make sure you register at a GP upon your arrival in The Hague.
• For emergencies after 17.00 hrs and during weekends, you can contact the huisartsenpost (hadoks) via phone number +31 (0) 70 34 69 669.

The Hague Studentdoc

‘De Doc huisartsen’ has been located in the centre of Den Haag for over 20 years. The last years the student population in The Hague is growing fast. To provide better healthcare for students, De Doc started an auxiliary branche especially for students, called StudentenDoc. It is a general practice especially for students.

In addition to the healthcare provided by the general practitioners, de Doc huisartsen have special attention for questions concerning:

• Health combined with the student life
• Stress
• Contraception
• STDs
• How to quit smoking

After your confirmed registration at TU Delft, you will have to open a dutch bank account. To open a bank account, you need to be registered at a Dutch address. 

If you do not have your bank account yet, you may have to pay your new landlord internationally. In our experience, services like Transferwise have been helpful in this regard.

Stores, restaurants etc. in the Netherlands usually only accept cash or the Dutch-specific Maestro cards, VISA or Mastercard.

The OV-Chipcard is a card which can be used to travel around the country by public transport. It is accepted on all trains, trams, subway and busses. Please find out more on the OV-chip card website.

The Netherlands is famous for its biking culture, and it is certainly one of the best ways to get around. Please be aware of the Dutch cycling rules.

It is possible to buy a (used) bike online or in a store, but it is also possible to lease or rent one. Take a look at www.marktplaats.nl, www.swapfiets.nl or www.mobike.com, or check with your fellow students.

If you don't have any, or very little, experience in Python programming, you are invited to take part in this free, online preparatory course from TUDelft.

Microsoft Teams is our main method of communication between students. Once you get a TU Delft NetID, you can use it to log in on Microsoft Teams! This webpage contains information on how to set up Microsoft Teams on your computer and on how to use it.

Before the start of the academic year, you will be added to the EPA Community Microsoft Teams environment. As you can see in the image below, the EPA Community consists of different channels, each for a different topic.

The General channel is meant for general posts related to the EPA programme. Channels with Cohort in their name are meant for posts that are related to a specific cohort within the EPA programme. Microsoft Teams is a space for discussing courses, working in group projects, and posting opportunities and events. Official academic communication will be facilitated through BrightSpace. Microsoft Teams is the main method of communication between EPA students. Microsoft Teams can also help to learn to know each other. To make it easier to combine faces with names please do upload a picture as soon as you have an account.

Every year in August, the Engineering and Policy Analysis (EPA) thesis conference takes place in the Wijnhaven Building in The Hague. Many 2nd year students will present their thesis research in various ways. Discussion, games and workshops and a drink or party are part of the programme. It is a great opportunity for you to learn about EPA and hear experiences from other students. Visit the portal Study in The Hague. This portal is designed for all students in The Hague. On this portal, you can find information about jobs, sports and all kinds of practical information about the city.

The Hague International Centre is a good first starting point for new residents arriving in The Hague. The centre provides an introductory pack and helps with practical tips on healthcare, parking permits and making contact with other international residents. Their course "Welcome to The Hague" is a good opportunity to meet people and join a guided tour of the city centre.
