City of the Future

One of the major global trends is urbanization. According to the UN, world population in cities will keep growing: by 2050, 70% of the population is expected to live in cities. Matters like mobility and accessibility, food and waste cycles, energy supplies, social inclusiveness, to name a few, have a direct influence on the functioning of the urban systems as well as on well-being, social connections and movements of the inhabitants. In addition, we also live in times of major innovations: e.g., in the field of energy, traffic, transport, circularity, automation or digitization, where major system changes are coming to the fore. Yet, uncertainties and unpredictable events will more and more raise the degree of difficulty in facing those issues.

In the meantime, cities have to cope with a number of pressing challenges. First and foremost the need of suitable space. Where do we build homes and facilities that are needed to house everyone? How do we ensure a good business climate? How do we deal with the displacement of people? And how do we make sure that all these transformation tasks are carried out in a compact manner preventing undesired effects on existing urban fabrics and landscapes? City of the Future is a multidisciplinary graduation studio focusing on these matters and on other questions related to the transformation or our cities towards attractive and inclusive future urban environment.

Students of different MSc tracks will be dealing with various themes (e.g. spatial, policy, energy, societal) sharing insights and perspectives about the multifaceted future challenges of cities. Students will work together also in designing part of their own study pathway by means of workshops, lectures, excursions and other (extra)curricular activities.
