Exhibition: The ECOcampus Food Village

Time: 27/07/2024 - 24/11/2024
Location: TU Delft Hortus Botanicus

EcoCampus is a visionary project aimed at enhancing biodiversity and climate adaptability on the TU Delft campus. This year, the focus is on creating an edible landscape: the Food Village.

The Food Village is a student design project of the On Site ECOcampus course 2024 - students and staff, the Hortus, The Faculty Club-Masterchef and people who work on campus collaborated to set up a plan to grow fresh food on campus!
Locally produced food offers numerous benefits, including a smaller carbon footprint, enhanced biodiversity, and superior taste. The Food Village will supply the Faculty Club’s kitchen with fresh produce and serve as a hands-on learning space for students and teachers to explore sustainable food production. In collaboration with the Hortus Botanicus, the Food Village will cultivate 125 edible plant species.

The centre of this Food Village is located at the historic Hammen farm. With the design idea of introducing a Food Village, they re-introduce the tradition of agricultural landscape while restoring the heritage and integrating social, research-educational and biodiversity purposes.

Food Village is part of a broader vision for the TU Delft campus to cultivate a biodiverse edible landscape, provide habitats for diverse flora and fauna and to create spaces for social interaction, education, research and recreation. Key features include a Tea Garden, Formal Front Garden, Food Forest, Vegetable Garden, Courtyard, and Greenhouse. This innovative project showcases TU Delft’s commitment to sustainability and offers a unique, interactive experience for the campus community.
