Existential Tuesday: Is monogamy dead?

12 november 2024 12:45 - Locatie: The Nook | Zet in mijn agenda

What is (or are) the best model(s) for an intimate relationship?

In theory, modern society makes it easier for everyone to choose their own kind of intimate relationship. We are no longer bound to the basic model of hetero salary-man & housewife, married and monogamous till the end of days, as consecrated by religious authorities. And yet, most people still try to stick to the model. Is this nature? Or nurture?

What other models are available to us? Long term, short term; one partner, multiple partners, no partner; open relationships; straight, bi, queer, or asexual; real life or virtual; romantic or pre-arranged; child-rearing or childless; official or clandestine? Should any and all forms of being together be sanctioned? And is any particular one of them better suited to our times than the others? both culturally and economically?

We can talk about the influence of dating apps on commitment, or the power of intimacy vs individualization, you name it. But we will have to talk about sex and love and togetherness in the context of personal freedom and cultural norms. Are we still able to bond when we’re all so used to having things our own way?

For inspiration, watch this TED talk by author Christopher Ryan on sex and pair bonding. There’s some talk about Darwin, bonobos, and sexually autonomous societies.
