Data-Intelligent Energy Performance and Flexibility of Buildings
This talk will illustrate use of grey-box and other simplified models related to smart buildings. First of all it will be illustrated how data-intelligent and grey-box models can be used for providing evidence-based information about the thermal performance of buildings using meter data. Secondly, we will illustrate how simplified models can be used for characterizing the flexibility of buildings using the concept of a Flexibility Function. It will be described how these models can be used for optimal control of the energy consumption. The controllers are able to focus on energy efficiency, cost and CO2-emission while maximizing the comfort. We will introduce the concept of a Flexibility Index as a data- and evidence-based alternative to the Smart Readiness Indicator. Finally, we will describe how grey-box models can be used to estimate the occupancy in buildings for optimal control of the indoor climate.

Making homes efficient and comfortable using ML and IoT data
Energy wastage by residential buildings is a significant contributor to total worldwide energy consumption. Quby, an Amsterdam based technology company known for creating the Toon smart thermostat and in-home display, offers solutions to empower homeowners to stay in control of their electricity, gas and water usage. Using Europe’s largest energy dataset, consisting of petabytes of IoT data, the company has developed ML-powered products that are used by hundreds of thousands of users every day.
In this talk, Stephen will describe how machine learning is implemented at Quby and will show multiple use cases backed by high-resolution IoT data. We'll take a look how Quby tackles waste through personalized insights into energy usage and how smart heating control maintains a comfortable climate in the homes of Toon users.
