The Worth of the Earth

Virtually everything that supports our modern lifestyle requires sourcing minerals for construction. The demand for minerals will only increase in the future as they become more sought after with rising demand for sustainable designs and projects. However, the rising demand has not been met with adequate preparations to meet them. Various countries are unfortunately still struggling with eliminating child labour and poor worker conditions.

How long can we continue digging for minerals? The maquette pictured here represents a space within my exhibition which explores the negative effects of digging for minerals. The old cabinets from the previous Science Center exhibitions were fashioned into benches, and their drawers were hung on the walls to frame exhibits. These drawer frames light up one by one, and tell two stories of children who have experienced the horrors of child labor first hand.
