I am an associate professor at the Engineering Systems and Services at the TBM Faculty of Technology, policy and management at, Delft University of Technology. She is also an affiliated member of the Institutional Grammar Research Initiative, Institutions for Collective Action and the Ostrom Workshop.
I study the role of institutions in climate change mitigation and adaptation, focusing on collective action and community engagement. I use modelling, simulation, network analysis in combination with qualitative methods to conduct my research.
I use simulation models to study institutional dynamics; which I refer to as institutional modelling. In my simulation work, I brings in intangible concepts such as norms, culture and values that influence human behaviour and interaction. These allow for modelling human “irrational” behaviour and explaining underlying mechanisms for actions such as noncompliance to regulations. I have also developed a method called “institutional network analysis” to study relations between institutions. My proposed research methodologies integrate qualitative data (e.g. collected through ethnographic research) into quantitative models.
