Do's & Dont's (on campus)
Do you know how long before the exam you need to arrive? Are you allowed to use the toilet during an exam? What should you do when you have finished your exam paper? You will find all these answers and more in this section.
Before the exam
YOU MUST...
- make sure any mobile phones and/or electronic devices are switched off prior to entering the exam venue and placed in your bag; Scans for electronic devices will take place in the exam rooms.
- arrive at the examination venue in time: you may enter the exam venue 15 minutes before the start of the exam.
- place your Campus Card at the corner of your desk. This will be checked by invigilators during the exam.
- always follow the instructions of the invigilator.
- add your personal details (Student ID Number etc.) to the answer/question paper as instructed on the question paper.
YOU MUST NOT...
- keep mobile phones and/or electronic devices in your pockets. Having a mobile phone with you and/or leaving it switched on is considered an examination fraud and will be reported to the Board of Examiners. One possible consequence of this is that your exam may be declared invalid.
- arrive late: 30 minutes after the start of the exam session, no one else will be admitted to the exam.
- speak to other candidates once you have entered the exam venue. It is an examination offence to talk to other candidates once you are in the exam venue.
During the exam
YOU MUST...
- raise your hand if you have a query. The invigilator will come to you.
- wait until 30 minutes has passed since the official start of the exam before asking to leave the venue.
- wait for permission to leave the venue. In urgent cases, permission may be granted to leave the venue temporarily after the initial 30 minutes has passed if accompanied by an invigilator. Only one student may be absent at a time.
YOU MUST NOT...
- look at another student’s work during an exam, or exchange information and/or materials in any way with other students either inside or outside the exam venue.
- have available or consult any books, lecture notes, notes or other written material, unless instructed to do so by the examiner.
- write the text of your answers in pencil, unless the examiner has given permission to do so in advance.
- talk to other participants during the exam.
At the end of the exam
YOU MUST...
- hand in the exam paper at the end of the exam, unless instructed otherwise by the examiner.
- make sure that each page of the exam paper has your name and student number;
- hand in the completed exam to the examiner or invigilator before leaving the exam venue after completing the exam.
- leave the exam venue quickly and quietly and remember to take your personal belongings with you.
YOU MUST NOT...
- continue to write after the exam has finished. It is an examination offence to continue to work after the announcement for the end of the exam has been made, you must stop writing immediately.
- disturb other students who are still working. It is an examination offence to talk inside the exam venue.
- talk until you are well away from the examination venue - you should be aware that other exams may be continuing.
