Architecture

The Architecture track programme is structured with a disciplinary first year focusing on core subjects and design studios followed by a variety of electives, with the possibility to choose intradisciplinary subjects. The second year starts with an interdisciplinary subject followed by a disciplinary graduation trajectory. Further, Q1 offers an Architectural Design and Research Methods lecture series (5 EC) and Q2 offers an Architectural History and Theory lecture series (5 EC). Please note: You may do your full Master course programme at one and the same studio if so desired; you can also switch design studios from MSc 1 to MSc 2, and then again choose a different combined MSc 3 & 4 studio. Graduation | Q6, Q7, Q8 The final three quarters of the second year (Q6, Q7, Q8) are reserved for the Graduation Studio and form a coherent whole (40 EC). In Q6, parallel to the Graduation Studio, a methodology course is offered, in which the theoretical foundation of the individual graduation project is developed (5 EC). Within the Department of Architecture several groups offer both MSc 1 Design Studios and Graduation Studios. These studios have developed their own design approach and way of working over the years. Depending on your preference you can choose to take your MSc 1 Design Studio and Graduation Studio within the same group, but this is not mandatory. Haven’t you completed all MSc2 courses in the previous academic year 2023-2024? If so, you can continue to do so this academic year: enrol for MSc2 courses in the next enrolment period (25 November until 6 December). Both the AUBS and Geomatics MSc programmes have elective space of 15 EC in Q4. A list of permitted electives for each programme/track is available in the Study guide. MSc 2 The MSc2 semester of the Architecture track consists of 5 credits of compulsory courses and 25 credits of electives. A significant part of these electives must be completed with an elective research and design studio offered by the Architecture track or an approved (by the Board of Examiners) design project at one of the international partner universities. Second year Graduation During the second year, students choose one of the different graduation studios. The programme consists of a graduation studio of two linked semesters. MSc3 consists primarily of research, in which the subject matter of the course is examined in greater depth. In MSc4 a design assignment is worked out in detail, either theoretically or in a practical sense. The two semesters comprise a whole in which students develop their design instruments and enhance their skills to contribute to architectural design and research in relation to social and technical issues. * Please note that due to the limited capacity of the studios there is no guarantee you can be placed at the studio of your preference. Landscape Architecture

The Landscape Architecture track deals with making space inspired by nature, art and technology whereby the formal, material and cultural qualities of the site form the departure of the design. The track teaches students to transform and create compositions ‘through’ scale, time and as a process. Landscape Architecture is an independent design discipline strongly related to Urbanism and Architecture. Freshly started in September 2024? First year (2024-2025) The first three quarters of the programme are complementary and introduce you to the fundamental domains of Landscape Architecture. In addition to developing your design skills, you acquire knowledge of plants and vegetation types, soils, hydrology, ecology, sociology, landscape history and theory of landscape architecture. Integrated in the landscape design projects several architectural aspects and different urban contexts are addressed. Field trips complement lecturing and studio work. In the fourth quarter (Q4) you join one of the intradisciplinary courses in which you are challenged to work together with students from other tracks within the Master Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences on overarching themes. In Q6 you select a topic and site, develop a study plan and start a research proposal that eventually leads to your graduation thesis. In Q7 and Q8 the focus lies on landscape design. In Q6 a separate methodology course (5 EC) provides the foundation for your research activities. Second year The second year is dedicated to the preparation, elaboration and finalisation of an individual graduation project. The core of the graduation year (MSc3/4) is the Flowscapes Graduation Studio (AR3LA031; 20 EC + AR4LA010; 30 EC) supported by two related courses: Research Methodology in Landscape Architecture (AR3LA020; 5 EC), and Analysis and Visualisation (AR3LA011; 5 EC). The Flowscapes Graduation Studio relates to the projects and activities within our research portfolio Landscape Systems and Compositions. A variety of so-called ‘graduation labs’ enable students - working in small groups - to contribute to a specific research theme or topic. In the first semester of the second year (MSc 3), students develop a study plan and a research proposal including a methodology for the graduation thesis. In the second semester (MSc 4), the project becomes a fulltime effort. Students receive periodical feedback from the first (the lab coordinator) and second mentor (from an adjacent section or department). Building Technology

The Building Technology track focuses on research, technological design and innovation, dealing with the newest technology and interacting with the current market. This programme offers a balance between applied research and design of buildings and building elements. Freshly started in September 2024? First year (2024-2025) First semester (MSc1) | Q1 & Q2 In MSc1 you deep your academic skills and technical knowledge through core building technology courses and the Bucky Lab design studio. This gives you the opportunity to construct your own project in a 1:1 scale. Visit the study guide for more information about the courses of the first two quarters. Second semester (MSc2) | Q3 & Q4 In MSc2 you can choose from electives (3 x 5 EC) offered by the Building Technology track in order to deepen you technical knowledge and skills. You also follow one of the 4 offered design courses: The courses ‘EXTREME technology’, ‘MEGA’ and ‘Heritage and Architecture Design Studio’ are projects for integrated design. The design project ‘EXTREME technology’ deals with building in an extreme situation in respect to climate, location and function. The design project ‘MEGA’ is about large buildings with engineering challenges. Essence of both courses is the interaction between the extreme circumstances and/or large sizes, the technical solutions, and the architecture. The ‘Heritage and Architecture Design Studio’ deals with the same engineering challenges with a focus on existing buildings. ‘Entrepreneurship in the Built Environment’ is meant for students who want to understand how organisations in the built environment operate, how they change in time, and in what ways they can contribute to innovation. Graduation Graduation takes place in the Building Technology Graduation Studio . The possible graduation topics are explained in an information meeting usually in the first week(s) of the first quarter in September, also the procedure will be explained on this meeting. The topics as well as a studio manual (with the procedure) will be placed on Brightspace. Enrolment During the fourth quarter of the first year, students enrol for the MSc3 quarter 5 and 6 courses for the autumn (or spring when starting the MSc3 in February) semester of the second year. Students should enroll for both, the quarter 5 design studio and for the graduation studio. Students are informed by an email of student affairs about the enrolment period and procedure. Enrolment for the continuation of the graduation in MSc4 will be automatically after a successful P2 presentation of the graduation project at the end of the MSc3 semester. TU Delft jointly wins XPRIZE Rainforest drone competition in Brazil

TU Delft jointly wins in the XPRIZE Rainforest competition in the Amazon, Brazil Imagine using rapid and autonomous robot technology for research into the green and humid lungs of our planet; our global rainforests. Drones that autonomously deploy eDNA samplers and canopy rafts uncover the rich biodiversity of these complex ecosystems while revealing the effects of human activity on nature and climate change. On November 15, 2024, after five years of intensive research and competition, the ETHBiodivX team, which included TU Delft Aerospace researchers Salua Hamaza and Georg Strunck, achieved an outstanding milestone: winning the XPRIZE Rainforest Bonus Prize for outstanding effort in co-developing inclusive technology for nature conservation. The goal: create automated technology and methods to gain near real-time insights about biodiversity – providing necessary data that can inform conservation action and policy, support sustainable bioeconomies, and empower Indigenous Peoples and local communities who are the primary protectors and knowledge holders of the planet’s tropical rainforests. The ETHBiodivX team, made of experts in Robotics, eDNA, and Data Insights, is tackling the massive challenge of automating and streamlining the way we monitor ecosystems. Leading the Robotics division, a collaboration between TU Delft’s Prof. Salua Hamaza, ETH Zurich’s Prof. Stefano Mintchev and Aarhus University’s Profs. Claus Melvad and Toke Thomas Høye, is developing cutting-edge robotic solutions to gather ecology and biology data autonomously. “We faced the immense challenge of deploying robots in the wild -- and not just any outdoor environment but one of the most demanding and uncharted: the wet rainforests. This required extraordinary efforts to ensure robustness and reliability, pushing the boundaries of what the hardware could achieve for autonomous data collection of images, sounds, and eDNA, in the Amazon” says prof. Hamaza. “Ultimately, this technology will be available to Indigenous communities as a tool to better understand the forest's ongoing changes in biodiversity, which provide essential resources as food and shelter to the locals.” . . . .

Students Amos Yusuf, Mick Dam & Bas Brouwer winners of Mekel Prize 2024

Master students Amos Yusuf, from the ME faculty (Mick Dam, from the EEMCS faculty and graduate Bas Brouwer have won the Mekel Prize 2024 for the best extra scientific activity at TU Delft: the development of an initiative that brings master students into the classroom teaching sciences to the younger generations. The prize was ceremonially awarded by prof Tim van den Hagen on 13 November after the Van Hasselt Lecture at the Prinsenhof, Delft. They received a statue of Professor Jan Mekel and 1.500,- to spend on their project. Insights into climate change are being openly doubted. Funding for important educational efforts and research are being withdrawn. Short clips – so called “reels” – on Youtube and TikTok threaten to simplify complex political and social problems. AI fakes befuddle what is true and what is not. The voices of science that contribute to those discussion with modesty, careful argument and scepticism, are drowned in noise. This poses a threat for universities like TU Delft, who strive to increase student numbers, who benefit from diverse student populations and aim to pass on their knowledge and scientific virtues to the next generation. It is, therefore, alarming that student enrolments to Bachelor and Master Programs at TU Delft have declined in the past year. Students in front of the class The project is aimed to make the sciences more appealing to the next generation. They have identified the problem that students tend miss out on the opportunity of entering a higher education trajectory in the Beta sciences – because they have a wrong picture of such education. In their mind, they depict it as boring and dry. In his pilot lecture at the Stanislas VMBO in Delft, Amos Yusuf has successfully challenged this image. He shared his enthusiasm for the field of robotics and presented himself as a positive role model to the pupils. And in return the excitement of the high school students is palpable in the videos and pictures from the day. The spark of science fills their eyes. Bas Brouwer Mick Dam are the founders of NUVO – the platform that facilitates the engagement of Master Students in high school education in Delft Their efforts offer TU Delft Master Students a valuable learning moment: By sharing insights from their fields with pupils at high school in an educational setting, our students can find identify their own misunderstandings of their subject, learn to speak in front of non-scientific audiences and peak into education as a work field they themselves might not have considered. An extraordinary commitment According to the Mekel jury, the project scored well on all the criteria (risk mitigation, inclusiveness, transparency and societal relevance). However, it was the extraordinary commitment of Amos who was fully immersed during his Master Project and the efforts of Brouwer and Dam that brought together teaching and research which is integral to academic culture that made the project stand out. About the Mekel Prize The Mekel Prize will be awarded to the most socially responsible research project or extra-scientific activity (e.g. founding of an NGO or organization, an initiative or realization of an event or other impactful project) by an employee or group of employees of TU Delft – projects that showcase in an outstanding fashion that they have been committed from the beginning to relevant moral and societal values and have been aware of and tried to mitigate as much as possible in innovative ways the risks involved in their research. New catheter technology promises safer and more efficient treatment of blood vessels

Each year, more than 200 million catheters are used worldwide to treat vascular diseases, including heart disease and artery stenosis. When navigating into blood vessels, friction between the catheter and the vessel wall can cause major complications. With a new innovative catheter technology, Mostafa Atalla and colleagues can change the friction from having grip to completely slippery with the flick of a switch. Their design improves the safety and efficiency of endovascular procedures. The findings have been published in IEEE. Catheter with variable friction The prototype of the new catheter features advanced friction control modules to precisely control the friction between the catheter and the vessel wall. The friction is modulated via ultrasonic vibrations, which overpressure the thin fluid layer. This innovative variable friction technology makes it possible to switch between low friction for smooth navigation through the vessel and high friction for optimal stability during the procedure. In a proof-of-concept, Atalla and his team show that the prototype significantly reduces friction, averaging 60% on rigid surfaces and 11% on soft surfaces. Experiments on animal aortic tissue confirm the promising results of this technology and its potential for medical applications. Fully assembled catheters The researchers tested the prototype during friction experiments on different tissue types. They are also investigating how the technology can be applied to other procedures, such as bowel interventions.
