Innovation

TU Delft OPEN Publishing embraces innovation in digital publishing. We develop not only innovative products and infrastructures, but also innovative processes and policies that will be stirred through an incubator process.

In 2020, we will explore different types of interactive-, or enhanced publications.
An enhanced publication is a way of publishing in which a traditional publication (a book, an article or a report) is enriched with additional information. It relies on the linking possibilities of the web, is often tailored to serve specific scientific domains and is generally constituted by a set of interconnected parts corresponding to research assets of several kinds (e.g. datasets, videos, images, stylesheets, services, workflows, databases, presentations) and to textual descriptions of the research (e.g. papers, chapters, sections, tables). In addition, the video abstracts or Infographics, or linking to social media, conferences, presentations and author profile pages or ORCiD pages, are relevant.

We will also experiment with publishing articles beyond the framework of a journal.
Historically science results were exchanged in the form of letters to the scientific community and science was discussed among selected audience. To increase efficiency entrepreneurs started to collect these letters in bundles that became journals. With the digital technologies and interoperability there is no need for a journal as a unit of publishing any more. Our ‘single-article publishing’ will explore the technical requirements of a platform and software to publish their (single) articles without having to assign them to a journal.
