In 1795, the Batavian Republic was proclaimed and a new administrative division evolved (1798). The government needed a map of the entire territory of the Republic. The regional maps that were available before this point did not correspond well with each other. (These regional maps can be found in the Provincial State Archives and in the National Archives of the Netherlands in The Hague.)

Baron C.R.T. Kraijenhoff (1758-1840) was commissioned to develop a completely new map. A triangulation method was used to survey the whole country, which formed the basis of the new map. The survey and engraving took place between 1798 and 1822. The first sheet was printed in ± 1809; the last amended version was printed in ± 1870.

The map consists of nine sheets (sheet layout) on a scale of 1:115,200.
