From 10 September until 14 October, the BK Expo 'Documenting Lalibela – Exploring Ethiopia’s sacred architecture through the photography of Iwan Baan and historical records' will be on show in the Oostserre.

The first exhibition of the academic year 2024/25, Documenting Lalibela, invites visitors to explore Ethiopia's celebrated architectural marvels. Hosted by BK Public Programs, this exhibition offers an in-depth look at the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, known for their remarkable design and profound cultural and spiritual significance.

Featuring the work of photographer Iwan Baan, alongside historical drawings and scale models, Documenting Lalibela provides an exploration of these ancient monuments. The exhibition highlights how art, architecture, and history come together to tell the story of a place where the sacred and the built environment are deeply connected.

Opening

The opening of the exhibition Documenting Lalibela will take place on 10 September at 17:00. The event will begin with a guided tour led by Iwan Baan and Dean Dick van Gameren, followed by BK Talks: In Conversation with Iwan Baan — a lecture and discussion with the photographer. This event offers a chance to learn about his creative process and the stories behind his images of Lalibela. Be part of an evening that will deepen your understanding of one of the world’s most intriguing architectural sites.
