23 April 2021 12:45 till 13:45 - Location: ONLINE - By: Communication BK | Add to my calendar

On 23 April, the lecture 'Tropical Architecture made in Bavaria? Lippsmeier + Partner and the Institut für Tropenbau in Tanzania’ will take place, with speakers Rachel Lee and Monika Motylinska.

This lecture will address the intertwined activities of the architectural office Lippsmeier + Partner (L+P) and its research arm, the Institut für Tropenbau [Institute for Building in the Tropics] (IFT). Based in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, from the 1960s L+P and IFT practiced extensively in the “global South,” particularly in Tanzania. Focusing on “social infrastructure” projects in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, the lecture will explore how L+P and IFT encountered and engaged with a decolonising society undergoing nation building processes. Drawing on archival research, fieldwork and interviews, it will investigate links to German colonialism and the West German state as well as the agency of Tanzanian actors. The lecture will shed light on the entrepreneurial and simultaneously research-oriented functioning of this unique practice, entangled in the global developments of the post-WWII era.
