Women as Developers: Women’s Involvement in Housing Initiatives

With a population exceeding 174 million, Bangladesh faces significant gender inequalities despite a slight female majority reported in the 2022 census. These disparities are particularly evident in public spaces, where cultural norms like Purdah restrict women’s mobility and access to education, employment and healthcare. The Sylhet region exemplifies these challenges, with pronounced spatial divisions and a lack of semi-private spaces exacerbating gender discrepancies. This study explores how women’s involvement in housing initiatives in Sylhet can influence financial sustainability, resident satisfaction and community cohesion. Through participatory planning, sustainable building practices and capacity-building, the project aims to create an inclusive living environment that addresses the unique needs of women while fostering community-driven solutions. This approach highlights the critical role of women in promoting equitable access to both public and private spaces, contributing to a more holistic and sustainable development in Bangladesh.
