The KNAW has selected eighteen new members, four of whom are from TU Delft. One of them includes Professor Frans van der Helm, professor of Biomechatronics and Bio-robotics in the BioMechanical Engineering department.

Frans van der Helm (1960)
Professor in biomechatronics & human-machine control
With his research Frans van der Helm bridges the gap between biomedical sciences and mechanical engineering. He integrates theories of neuromuscular control through the brain and spinal cord, using highly advanced muscle-skeletal models, to understand the neural and biomechanical principles of human movements. The methods and models he has developed appear to be widely applicable: from robotics and semi-autonomous driving cars to injury prevention in sports such as joint implants and surgical technology. Van der Helm is one of the figureheads and drivers of collaboration between clinicians and technicians, a field that is now rapidly emerging. This is evident, for example, from the establishment of Medical Delta, in which many parties, including university hospitals and TU Delft, collaborate on technological solutions for sustainable care.

The other three new TU Delft members are: Ibo van de Poel, Jack Pronk and Barbara Terhal.
