Hindcast of the flood event 2021 at the Rur-river as preparation of impact-based forecasting
MSc Thesis: Sebastian Hartgring
The flood in July 2021 was one of the most severe flood events in the last decades in Europe: more than 220 casualties, about 20 billion € economic damages, and severe ecological consequences show the severity of the event. It also raised many questions in governments, industry, and research institutes. In particular, questions are raised if model instruments used for forecasting, planning, or risk assessments are capable to reproduce the event. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an efficient and accurate impact-based flood nowcasting model for the Rur. Hindcasting of the 2021 flood event forms the basis of this research.
