Neualtland: A Layered Local Jewish Narrative

Based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Neualtland deals with the unearthing of spatial and cultural layers of its city centre, focusing on the modern urban fabric built on the ruins of the Judengasse, the centuries-old Jewish ghetto. Regarding all layers as indispensable fragments of the place’s story, the project negotiates between the scant traces of the historic fabric and the post-WWII urban blocks that obscure them from the cityscape, culminating in a detailed architectural intervention in two utterly ordinary 1960s office buildings built on the site of the ghetto’s main synagogue.
Shedding light on underexplored aspects of erased Jewish spaces in Germany, Neualtland expands the means through which architectural heritage can be understood, appropriated and reclaimed. After being exhibited in Frankfurt earlier this year, the project is now part of Frankfurt’s Jüdisches Museum collection and a benchmark for the future development of the city centre in relation to its history.
