Health Month EEMCS Lunch Lecture Series During the February Health Month within TU Delft several EEMCS researchers will give lunch lectures on the health research we do within the faculty, and will showcase their incredible work within patient-oriented technological healthcare. Are you a MSc or PhD student, or a researcher, and interested in making an impact on healthcare with your work? Join one or more of these interesting lectures to discover how we work to tackle a variety of challenges in the domain of health and wellbeing. Abstract Lecture on Big data in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Anesthesiology is an unknown concept for most people and one that people only come into contact with during an operation. To improve perioperative care, the Anesthesiology department at Erasmus MC uses as much 'big data' available during operations as possible to make patient-specific predictions and provide more personalized care during and after surgery. The intelligent use of all available hospital data can provide patient-specific predictions and allow us to provide more personalized care to our patients during and after surgery. Given the complexity of big data, we are often confronted with mathematical problems, which are simply too complex for doctors to handle. We believe that the best solution to tackle these complex questions can be found by combining knowledge from experts with a technical background with experts with a medical background. This event is part of the TU Delft Health month Date : 27-2-2024 from 12:45 – 13:40 Name event: Lunch lecture Big data in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care For: Students and employees of TU Delft Speaker: Felix van Lier (Erasmus MC) and Nestor Parolya (TU Delft) Location: EEMCS-Lecture Hall Boole Free lunch included Sign up here

Tracing ancient settlements in Colombia with remote sensing

A team of the LDE alliance (Leiden University, TU Delft, and Erasmus University Rotterdam) asked whether it might be possible to search for signs of ancient settlements in the jungle with affordable remote sensing techniques. For an expedition in a Colombian dense forest, the team, including remote sensing expert Felix Dahle of TU Delft, joined forces with archaeologists and drone experts from Colombia. In mountainous forests, drones provide affordable access to areas that would otherwise be unreachable from the ground. A LiDAR laser scanner already proved its value in coastal observation . The big question was whether LiDAR could bypass the many treetops. Trees reflect the laser, so it was crucial to fly close so it found its way through the foliage. The team mounted a highly portable LiDAR laser scanner to a drone and went on expedition nearby ancient terraces of the Tairona culture in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. “We had to find the sweet spot. Close to the archaeological sites and still secure above the canopy”, says Felix Dahle. And it passed the test. The LiDAR laser scanner create a point cloud and a detailed 3D model of the landscape. “We were able to detect ancient terraces in the jungle. We discovered that we can scan through the forest when it is not too dense, but some areas remained unfathomable. We could also distinguish several types of vegetation, which might be of great use too to find undiscovered archaeological sites.”
