Last month Ph.D. Candidate Bo Sun defended his Ph.D. research with his thesis The Lifetime Prediction of LED Drivers and Lamps. He was supervised by G.Q. Zhang (Electronic Components, Technology and Materials).
Bo: “In this research I tried to predict the lifetime of LED drivers and lamps when the drivers are actually in the LED lamp itself. I did this since the conditions, such as the temperature, are different within a lamp then outside. LED lamps are a green lighting solution which save a lot of energy. A lot of research, however, is about the LED itself. I considered the complete system and looked at what happened when combining several elements.
The major contribution I did is that I found that the traditional life time measurement has large errors when making predictions. My approach can optimise the prediction methods and give more accurate predictions of the life time. When applied in industry, it would save them a lot of costs. In the future I plan to develop software such that my approach can be integrated and commercialised.“
